The Greenes lived initially in Gateshead. By the late 1870s they had moved to
Stelling Hall, a country house near Corebridge, between Gateshead and Hexham,
where the 1881 census records them living in some style with a staff of six
servants. They had four children and Mary's unmarried older sister Alice Porter
was with them as well, listed as a sister in law of John Greene.
